Split Buffalo Horn Wormy Headdress (Cody ) Buffalo horned headdresses were rarer than eagle feather warbonnets. Tribes of The Plains Indians believed they had protective powers and that they would ward off danger. Tribes such as the Cheyenne, Dakota, Sioux, Arapaho, Crow ,Cree, Pawnee, Hidatsu, Mandan, Gros Ventre, Arikara, Kiowa and Blackfeet were among the many Plains Indians which revered this type of majestic headdress. The Blackfeet tribe were mainly identified with the split buffalo horn wormy style. This headdress is a supreme example of the Blackfeet style. The original resides in the Plains Indian Museum which is a part of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center collection located in Cody , Wyoming. The headband consists of original seed beads with colors such as Cheyenne Pink, greasy yellow, cobalt blue and powder blue. The tips of the horns adorns yellow horse hair and ermine strips. Ermine hides make up the majority of any wormy headdress. The entire deerskin cap is covered with ermine hides continuing down to below the shoulders. Ermine hides along with antique hawk bells are found draped on the sides of the cap. Ermine drops wrapped in red leather are found below the ermine hides in a single row in the back of the headdress. 12 scalp locks wrapped with red leather as well are located in a single row towards the top of the inside deerskin panel. Also on the inside panel, you will find hand painted bear paw tracks and symbols. Larry derived the colors of the paint in the traditional style by crushing roots, bark, berries and leaves. Larry took exact measurements in reproducing this beautiful headdress. Larry's care and meticulous detail was always based upon his profound respect for his Native American culture. |
